Sylvia Hernandez-Distasi has been bringing her unique brand of circus style choreography to Chicago stages since 1991. An Artistic Associate of Lookingglass since 1999, and an Ensemble Member since 2019, she has won three Jeff Awards for Choreography with the company (The Baron in The Trees, Hard Times, and Lookingglass Alice). She has worked on 25 productions with the company, including: Black Diamond, Icarus, The Little Prince, Thaddeus and Slocum: A Vaudeville Adventure, Moby Dick, and Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, among others.
Other theater credits include: Steppenwolf Theatre Company, Goodman Theatre, Chicago Shakespeare Theater, Chicago Children’s Theatre, and Marriott Theater (Jeff Award for Choreography, All Night Strut). Sylvia is a co-founder of The Actors Gymnasium in Evanston, IL. She serves as the Artistic Director, as well as the Master Teacher, choreographer, and director of the Professional Circus Training Program. She is also on the movement faculty at Northwestern University. She was the recipient of the 3Arts Award for Choreography in 2014 and The Illinois Theater Associations Award of Honor for Outstanding Contributions in 2015.
Sylvia’s son Griffin is an engineering major at UIUC.
