About
The Young Ensemble is a group of Chicago-area teens committed to building their theater skills, lifting their voices, and developing their creativity through collaborative creation.
For over 27 years, YE participants have come together for skill-building workshops, rehearsals, and an annual production that weaves together language, visual spectacle, music, and the unique talents and contributions of the ensemble. Inclusive, rigorous, playful, and endlessly creative, the Young Ensemble builds not only better artists, but better collaborators, thinkers, and leaders.
Young Ensemble participants work directly with the theatre’s artists and leadership team to learn Lookingglass techniques for spectacular storytelling. Teens may participate as either a performer or member of the production team.
Tuition is $300. Scholarships available.
Rehearsals
The 2025-2026 Young Ensemble will be directed by Heidi Stillman with movement and choreography by Kasey Foster.
The Young Ensemble will meet Mondays and Saturdays from September – December. Additional rehearsals will be added on Wednesdays in November and December.
Public performances will occur in the Lookingglass Theatre Studio, December 12 – 14, 2025. Tickets on sale in October.
Auditions
Auditions will take place at Lookingglass Theatre on September 8 and 10 from 6 – 8:30pm. Register for auditions here. Auditionees will be asked to participate in ensemble exercises and will read scenes. Scenes will be provided in advance.
The Young Ensemble is for teens ages 13 – 18. No prior experience in theatre is required.

My son has been in the Lookingglass Young Ensemble for five years. He is not the same person who first auditioned for the ensemble (fyi parents – he did not make it the first time!). The way that his passion and understanding of theatre and of performance have blossomed through devising theatre, studying acting and movement with real Lookingglass ensemble members as coaches and even directors. What an incredible opportunity to perform TONY award winning plays directed by original cast members.
