KOPANO MUHAMMAD

Movement

Since 2025

Kopano Muhammad (they/them) Born on Chicago’s Southside, Kopano is a cultural worker who transmutes the present moment into powerful performances. They were immersed in dance and music classes at 4 years old, and have been exploring their personal expression through art since then. Seeing theirself in the legacy of Pan-Africanism, Kopano strives to bridge culture and genre gaps in Afro-Diasporic music and movement. Since finishing at Oberlin College & Conservatory in 2022, Kopano has had the pleasure of singing at The Taste of Chicago & Navy Pier’s Wave Wall Stage. Under the moniker Tsibinki, Kopano’s DJ style moves bodies and souls around the city, most recently at Stoney Island Art Bank as a mentee of Celeste Alexander. Kopano currently loves dancing with Praise Mother, 773Dance, and in Cristal Sabbagh’s “Freedom From, Freedom To” improv ensemble. As a 2024 recipient of Chicago DCASE’s Individual Artist Grant, they’re on a journey to reintegrate the true purpose of artistry into society as a tool for collective healing & celebration. You can visit Kopano at one of their residencies or keep an eye out for them on the dance floor, they’re always around!
