Ricketts' Circus 1793-1800

John Bill Ricketts is credited with bringing the Circus to America.  After witnessing Astley’s circus, he adapted the show into something of his own.  His circus was a combination of equestrian skills, which were adapted and mimicked in other companies, and theatrical performances.  Although he was only around for such a short time, he set the precedent and created the mold that modern day circuses still follow.  Popular modern companies such as Cirque de Soleil and Barnum and Bailey created their companies and presentations based on Ricketts’ Circus.
